25. BENJAMIN4 GRANT ROBINSON (Boswell3, John2, Joseph1). He was born 9 March 1849, probably in Owen County, Kentucky, and died 4 January 1939, Sacramento, California. Grant married MARY ELIZA KNOX,141 born June, 1851, in Missouri; died 19 January, 1947, in Sacramento, California. Grant Robinson was buried 6 January, 1939 in the Masonic Lawn Cemetery, Sacramento, California.

Grant Robinson, age 21, was listed in the 1870 federal census for Pike County, Illinois, living in the household of James Davis and his family, in dwelling 123, near his sister Mildred and her husband Lafayette Dabney, in Hadley township, Barry Post Office. The 1880 federal census for Pike County, Illinois, lists Grant, age 31, married to Mary, age 29, and children, William, age 8; Samuel, age 7, and George, age 4. By the 1900 federal census, Grant was living in Adams County, Illinois, in Payson Village, Payson township. Here he was enumerated as Benjamin Robinson, age 51, born March 1849, a farmer on a rented farm, with wife Mary E., age 49, born June 1851, Missouri, and children, William A., single, age 29, born October 1871; Harry E., born September 1880, single, age 19; and Clarence E., born June 1886, age 13. Grant Robinson had moved to California before the 1910 federal census was taken. Benjamin Grant Robinson’s return address was 2017 - 18th Street, Sacramento, California, on the envelope of a letter written to his sister Sarah Hannah (Robinson) Ware and postmarked 27 November 1928.

The 1910 federal census for Sacramento, Enumeration district 127, Ward 8, Precinct 34, Sacramento County, California, page 216B, lists Benjamin G. Robinson, age 61, married for 39 years, born Kentucky, father born Kentucky, mother born Kentucky, occupation: laborer (street work). With him were Mary Robinson, wife, born Missouri, age 59, the mother of 5 children, all living, father born Missouri (the 1920 census reports Ohio), mother born Ohio. Also in the household were Clarence Earl Robinson, age 23, son, a laborer (freight-Shasta R.R.) and William Kuhn, age 56, a boarder, single, born Germany, a laborer (street work).

The 1920 federal census lists Benjamin G. Robinson, age 70, living in Sacramento City, Enumeration district 103, Precinct 43, Sacramento County, California, page 249. The family was living in a rented home at 3318 J Street, census dwelling 73, family 83. Grant’s occupation was listed as “none.” Also in the household were Mary E. Robinson, wife, age 69, son George M. Robinson, age 44, laborer (real estate), and George’s children, Russell S. Robinson (age 19), foreman (locomotive), Mary A. Robinson (age 17), telephone operator, Walter E. Robinson (age 16), an apprentice (book bindery), and Lester E. Robinson (age 14). Two boarders, Henry C. DeWitt, age 25 (or 35), a widower, born Maryland, parents born Pennsylvania, occupation: missionary, and Elizabeth ?W. McQuitty, widow, age 51, born Tennessee, were listed also in the household.

The 1930 federal census142 for Sacramento City, District 88, Sacramento County, California, lists Benjamin G. Robinson, age 81, age at first marriage: 20; Grant’s wife, Mary, age 79, age at first marriage: 20; son George, age 54, D [divorced], age at first marriage: 23, a painting contractor. Two of George’s children are also listed in Benjamin Grant Robinson’s household: Lester, age 24, S [single], a manager of a railroad store; and Lola Geissler, age 32, Wd [widowed], age at first marriage: 20. With Lola is her son Robert Geissler, age 4, born California, father born California, mother born Illinois. Another of Grant and Mary Robinson’s sons is listed in the household, Clarence, age 42, D [divorced], age at first marriage: 30, a stevedore (railroad). Also listed is a great granddaughter of [Benjamin] Grant and Mary [Eliza] Robinson, ?Jewell Wietzel, female, age 11, born California, father born California, mother born Illinois. This four generation household lived in a rented house on 18th Street “after 7th.”

An item titled, “Retired Gardner Dies,” that appeared in the Sacramento Bee for 5 January 1939, stated Grant Robinson died at his home after a short illness and that he came to Sacramento County more than thirty-four years ago. Otherwise, this little news item contained much the same information as his obituary which appeared on the same page:

Robinson. In Fruit Ridge District. January 4, 1939, Benjamin Grant Robinson, husband of Mary E. Robinson. Father of George M., Clarence E. Robinson of Fruit Ridge District. Harry E. Robinson of Anderson, Calif., William A. and Samuel O. Robinson of Illinois; a native of Kentucky, aged 89 years. Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral tomorrow (Friday) at 2 P. M. from the chapel of Harry A. Nauman & Son, 2021 Twenty Eighth Street. Interment Masonic Lawn Cemetery.
An obituary of Mary E. Robinson appeared in the Sacramento Union, 21 January 1947:
Robinson. In this city, January 19, 1947, Mary Eliza Robinson, wife of the late Benjamin G. Robinson; mother of William A., Samuel O. Robinson of Illinois and Clarence E. Robinson of Sacramento; a native of Missouri, aged 96 years. Future notice of funeral. Harry A. Nauman & Son, funeral directors.

Clarence, age 42, divorced, again is listed with his parents, Grant and Mary Robinson, in the 1930 federal census. A Clarence E. Robinson, age 33, born Illinois, father born Kentucky, mother born Missouri, is found in the 1920 federal census for Brea Township, Brea town, Enumeration district 56, Orange County, California. His occupation was laborer. With him is his wife, Clara, age 27, born Oregon, father born Pennsylvania, mother born Missouri. There are no children listed. Also in the household: John Brown, age 40, single, roomer, born California, a laborer in the oil fields. I have not confirmed that the Clarence E. Robinson found in the 1920 census in Orange County was a son of Grant Robinson. Clarence Earl Robinson served in France during WW1

26. HENRY4 ROBERT ROBINSON (Boswell3, John2, Joseph1). He was born 9 March 1852, probably Daviess County, Kentucky; died 7 October 1937, in Center, Ralls County, Missouri, and is buried in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery, Ralls County, Missouri, in the same grave as his son Elias Sexton Robinson (1883–1912). Henry Robert married 22 November 1876, Auxvasse Township, Callaway County, Missouri, PERLINA FRANCIS ORGAN, born 13 October 1857, Madisonville, Ralls County, Missouri; died 24 April 1937, Keokuk, Iowa. Henry Robert and Perlina separated and Perlina is buried as Perlina F. Follom in Grand View Burial Park, Hannibal, Missouri. Perlina is buried in a gravesite that was owned by Lola and Harrison Hull, Lola being her daughter by [—?—] Herman.145

27. AMANDA4 MELVINA JANE ROBINSON (Boswell3, John2, Joseph1). She was born 2 January 1856, Daviess County, Kentucky, and died 30 June 1922, Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky. “Mandy” is buried in the Bethabara Baptist Church Cemetery, Habit, Daviess County, Kentucky. Mandy never married. Judging from her picture, she had Down’s Syndrome. After her parents died in 1863, she lived for many years with her sister Sarah Hannah (Robinson) Ware, though she is found in the 1880 federal census of Daviess County, Kentucky, living with her brother John Dudley Robinson in Owensboro, Kentucky. Amanda was again living with her sister, Sarah H. Ware in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 censuses. Eventually, at some time after the 1920 census, which was taken in January, she lived at the Western Kentucky State Hospital at Hopkinsville, where she died.
